TOKYO, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks erased earlier gains and retreated into negative territory Wednesday morning.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 61.65 points, or 0.26 percent, from Tuesday to 23,407.74.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 4.85 points, or 0.28 percent, at 1,756.27.

Chemical, pulp and paper, and iron and steel-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break. Enditem
